My New Favorite Quote
For the longest, this was my favorite quote:
The dumber people think you are, the more surprised they will be when you kill them.
And while I do still love it because that's just my sense of humor, it has been supplanted.
In February, I had one of the greatest experiences of my life in the best damn concert the Twin Cities Women's Choir has ever done. Joan Szymko put the words of Eleanor Roosevelt to music in The Beauty of Your Dreams. From that song, I learned this quote:
You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
I want that on a giant poster in a really cool font. Well, maybe not, but it's a little big to go on a post-it on my monitor.
Makes me a little verklempt every time we sing it. You know how putting things to music makes them all the more powerful.
If I ever get a piece of our recording to share I will (in as legal a way as possible, of course, in case our Executive Director is reading this).
You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
In the words of my new buddy Clarence, marinate.

That is a great quote, and she said one of my faves, too: Never allow a person to tell you 'no' who doesn't have the power to say 'yes.' So simple, so true.
Another fave:
Fish gotta swim, hearts gotta bleed. -- Molly Ivins
=)
I like the second one. I know it's more mature than the first one. But the first one made me tear up a little as I tried not to laugh out loud.
While I don't have one favorite quote I find that many of the words that motivate me, make me think, and have helped me change my life in a positive direction are from songs we have sung with the choir.
From Mary Bussman and Tracy E. Tracy's song We Go On I took the following:
"What we can hope for we can make come real."
and
"Trust what is inside it won't lead you wrong."
And The Beauty of Your Dreams, which your quote is from, is full of them. My other favorite from that text is:
"You gain courage and confidence every time that you are forced to look fear in the face."
Eleanor Roosevelt had some things to say!
Of course, I also enjoy quotes from Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons such as:
"Maybe the pointy kitty took your key."
and
"When I graduate, I'm going to Bovine University."
These, of course, are better in context.
This one from Kurt Vonnegut has always stuck with me for some reason:
"Just because some of us can read and write and do a little math, that doesn't mean we deserve to conquer the Universe."
And then, well, I can't find it right now and it's probably too long, but there is this part from The Little Prince that always makes me cry. But, I guess that's not really a quote, then, is it?
