Be appreciative, bitches.

One of my co-workers took his wife and three kids to Puerto Rico last week.

Of all the places I've visited, Puerto Rico is one of my favoritest. It's gorgeous. There's beaches. There's rainforest. You can do the city. You can do history. You can do wilderness. You can do shopping. The food is wonderful.

So I asked him how his trip was. And was subjected to a five-minute rant on how much the driving sucked. They stayed at a resort on the southwest end of the island. And they didn't like it. Because the driving sucked, and the service was a little slow at one roadside store they stopped at.

If you specifically chose to go to a less-populated portion of the island, what the fuck did you expect? It should not be a surprise that there's little more than a narrow, hairpin road up the side of a mountain.

We didn't go on vacation much when I was a kid. Couldn't afford it. When we did go, we drove. If we had been lucky enough to go somewhere like Puerto Rico, I like to think that my parents would have tried to make me appreciate it.

I realize that managing a trip with five people, three of which are your kids, can be stressful on people. But how do you expect the kids to appreciate it if you're bitching about the perceived lack of conveniences the whole time? If you want all that shit, stay home.

What a waste.

I hate hearing those kinds of stories. I never went anywhere in the world till I got a job that ships me out of town at least quarterly. And even though there are always pain-in-the-butt parts of trips, overall, you're out of your routine and seeing some gorgeous scenery and eating some exotic food. Those are the memories I take with me. I guess those "who have" are very different from those who don't.

Stuff like this aggravates me. I once worked as a nanny for some pretty wealthy people. They took me to Ibiza (Spain) and St. Tropez with them. They nothing but sit on the beach every day for the entire three week vacation. What a waste, indeed.

I wonder if they drive on the right side of the road in PR... (As embarrassing as this is to admit, we lived 40 miles from it for 5 years and never went there except to change planes.) Try driving an American car on the left side of the road on steep-a** hills with hairpin curves and no guardrails...with a stick shift...behind a water truck going 2 miles an hour. That was often my daily commute home on St. Thomas. Did that particular part suck? Well, sure...'cause I'm an impatient American (probably like that guy). But my god, the views!...the color of the Caribbean!...the entire harbor laid out before me!...the lushness of the foliage I was driving through! Dude needs to chill. :)

Vacationing's hard, hard work. ;-)

Ask me about my sweet hook-up on a house in Rincon next time you're ready to go. (If only we could afford airfare...)

I think I remember dropping my mobile down the steps to the T when you drunk dialed me from PR with your sister.

Oops. That can't be good.

I love Puerto Rico. And frankly, hope the experience of your coworker's family keeps them away. Less chance of me running into them while I walk from the beach to the local restaurant for a mojito and red snapper deal.
