Going Pro

I while back I mentioned I had this idea as to what to do with my other, non-blog domain. Right now, if you go there, there's a splash page with my email address on it, and that's it.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how, since I was left on my own in my job with very little training or experience, I've been forced to travel pretty steeply up the learning curve. It was particularly enlightening to go to a training seminar last summer and see how other companies do things instead of continuing to operate in a vacuum.

I've been wanting to put my observations, questions, struggles, learnings, etc. somewhere. In addition, I've been figuring since I use my email address at that other domain on my resume that maybe there ought to be something there that could actually help me get a job. Or I should at least have an electronic copy of my resume available.

So between all that, and then with the growing number of professionally-focused personal websites, I thought I should put together some kind of site that combines all that. I've listened to Chris Penn say it enough times that it finally sunk in.

I did a little bit of searching, and I couldn't find another site that does just that in the field that I'm in. I did find that a number of industry publications publish RSS feeds. I was simultaneously pleased that any of them did at all, but also disappointed that more of them didn't, or that those that did didn't format them in a more useful way. I also turned up some interesting resources.

I spent yesterday and today playing around with the backend. I've got the latest version of MT installed, stylesheet picked out (not married to it yet), subdomain set up, RSS feeds aggregated, other sites bookmarked, and a to do list.

I might just be demonstrating my ignorance to a potential employer. *shrug* This is more about my professional development journey than it is about being a subject matter expert. Because I'm far from being an expert. But I'm also trying to set it up in such a way that it's organized and scales well. Which I like to think is prudent and not just my being an Enneagram 5 and spending more time planning than doing. Although I do enjoy the setting up for the setting up's sake.

So I'll just be publishing into the ether for a while. I've got a list of folks I'll likely solicit feedback from as well, once I get it beefed up.

I've kept this entry in my Bloglines account for some time. I was just encouraged to do something similar, as an experimental project for work. I had suggested we hire somebody to write a blog for us specific to investing, and they all looked at me and said, "What if you did it?" Not that I have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, but then again, I am the best representative of our target audience we can think of. I hope I can come along on your journey, and if ever I launch mine, I'd love your feedback on it!
