Makes me want to take a trip right now.
Traveling Forever (which may be my new favorite website) has an article on taking a USB key or mini-hard drive when you travel instead of a laptop.
The thing about it is you can put portable applications on it. They suggest a web browser (Firefox), mail (Thunderbird), a word processor (AbiWord), instant messaging (Miranda), and image editing (GIMP). And then you can store all your photos and whatnot, depending on how much disk space you pony up for.
What a frickin' sweet idea!

sweet! thanks for the linky dink. now that i'm actually living this lifestyle, i don't think the usb thing would work for someone who is actually doing contract work due to the memory limitations, etc., but i love the idea. i also saw this chic today that had the smallest, sweetest damn sony viao ever. i'm thinking that if i keep this up i may downgrade to something smaller and lose a couple of lbs. great post. thanks!
Even better than FireFox is TorPark (Windoze only, sadly).
Mac users, read this. They do have portable Adium, Gimp, and so forth. I'm not sure about portable OpenOffice.org though, considering that NeoOffice is the slowest damn program I've ever had the misfortune of running.
