Some Job News
I think I've neglected to mention this at all, so let me catch y'all up.
If you'll remember a year ago I applied for an Associate Validation Engineer position with my company. That basically went nowhere. I was told that our parent company had instituted a hiring freeze and I didn't hear much more beyond that. I periodically talked to vice presidents and directors and engineers and whoever I thought could get me some information, point me in the right direction, or put in a good word for me. I got promoted within my department last summer, and I've been doing my team leader thing for six months now.
Three weeks ago I went down to HR and asked what was going on with hiring in engineering. I get told that they had just gone down to That School That's Inferior To Mine That They Hire All Their Engineers From for campus recruiting. Also, they had just talked to the hiring director for engineering and he had mentioned that he wanted to meet with me. Apparently every couple of months when they meet to discuss these things my name comes up.
So two weeks ago I met with him for the first time. I hadn't actually met him before. I've met, like, everyone else. But not him. So I chit chatted with him about what I'm interested in, a little bit about my background before coming here and at this company. Real basic stuff. He's a very nice guy. Turns out he also used to work at my Previous Employer.
The next day I checked back in with HR and they say that they have four soon-to-be-new grads scheduled to interview and they want me to get on the schedule as well. So this past Monday I went through my day o' interviews.
I think it went pretty well. Frankly, unless I totally blew something on Monday, there is NO REASON why I shouldn't get this job.
I didn't really get grilled, since most folks knew me already. One of the other engineers and my director didn't even ask me anything. I got a lot of good information on what the buzz has been on me. It was nice to hear all the positive feedback. And it was also nice to hear what their thoughts have been on my development and basically find out why I haven't moved until now. It would have been really nice to know all this a year ago, but hey.
Bosslady (my supervisor last year) was probably the toughest person all day. She asked a lot, but what I liked was for everything she asked me, she was able to relate it back to her experience and explain exactly why she asked the question. And since a big chunk of her experience was being my boss, it all made a lot of sense. And then she asked me some very specific personnel questions. Like when I get back around to having my current boss's job*, who would I want as my assistant? And who would I name as my replacement for my current position and why?
I was pleasantly surprised to find that they'll probably meet my salary expectations. I feel like they'll come back in the low range of what I asked, although think I ought to be getting in the higher end of the range. There's a small chance the parent company could balk and come back with something even lower. Which would really piss me off, but it would still be a substantial raise from where I am right now, so I wouldn't turn it down on account of that.
They couldn't nail down a timeframe for getting back to me. I think they'll decide on their end within the next week, but it's still gotta be processed through the parent company. I think they're not sure exactly how many spots they will need to fill (maybe 2, maybe 3). So it could be a few more weeks. And then who knows how long the transition would take after that.
I looked good. Fly Girl dressed and accessorized me. People, I wore earrings. I haven't worn earrings in forever and a damn day**. It was weird to be there half the day walking around the offices and dressed like the normal folks, and then go back up to the production area and change into my uniform. And I was totally drained after five hours of interviewing, and then having to go do six more hours of work.
So now I'm sitting, waiting to hear. I really hope they'll let me know as soon as they decide, even if the paperwork isn't all done yet. I don't think they will, though. I bet there's some sort of legal thing about that.
*The engineers here do rotations. First in the engineering department, then as a production supervisor (so my current boss), and then a third, more flexible option after that.
**For some reason I was just inspired to buy a pair of earrings for myself. So I guess I'm back on an earrings kick. FG's turning me into such a girl.

Wow - I hope the process goes quickly - and way to go Fly Girl (seriously - you wore like three pairs of earings when I saw you last!)
Best of luck and I hope you receive happy news!
PS By any chance were you referring to THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY?!
you wore like three pairs of earings when I saw you last -- Did I? That would be almost four years ago! So yeah.
By any chance were you referring to THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY?! -- Heh. No. Although OSU would certainly fall under that description, I was in fact referring to Iowa State University. :P
Iowa has a university?? ;-)
Good luck on all this! I know how draining it is, start to finish. But you're talented and a sure bet, so they'd be foolish not to hire you!
