Long Run Sunday
Someone at the Cool Running forums asked about goals for 2006. I'll probably wait until December or January to really work these out, but off the top of my head, I'm thinking:
- 2 half marathons
- 1 marathon
- a 5 mile race and a 10k (since I don't have official times for those distances)
- get some more structure around my low heart rate training
I hate the cold. I know I have to get used to running in the cold, but... UGH. There's no way I'm doing the Frozen Half. I'm going to do the San Francisco Half instead. It's the same weekend.
I really really really need to get some gloves and something for my face. A neck gaiter or something. Surprisingly, so far, once I've warmed up I haven't really been too uncomfortable with the exception of the extremities. I've been wearing compression shorts under my tights. I had stopped wearing them months ago because the butt jiggle mostly went away and because it was just too hot in the summer. But the extra layer has been helpful without being too bulky. Except that I think they're chafing a little, so I might need to get some different ones. These aren't running shorts, they're baseball/softball shorts, so there are some seams in some awkward places.
I had thought the fact that the under-arm vents on my jacket zip almost completely open was kind of silly, but I get it now. You need the jacket to keep moisture/wind out, but it also keeps moisture in, so you really do need the venting so your sweat doesn't condense inside.
I was gonna do the Arena5K on Thanksgiving Day, but I chickened out on account of the weather. A cold front came through and it was quite snuggly and warm in bed.
I only actually skipped one day last week, but I felt like a total slug anyway. And then I thought I was starting to come down with something. I was hoping it was just dehydration or lack of good sleep or something. It was still hanging around on Sunday, so I was hoping my six miles would help me sweat it out. I wasn't thrilled about the fog, even though it was a balmy 44° out. But it went alright. And I finally gave up the guilt about that day I missed and rested today, even though it was an even balmier 55° out.
I ran on the track at the Y for the first time. I hated it. The track is so small I start to lose count of the laps. If you get more than three people on it at a time, it's too crowded. And it was kinda hot and dry in there. It wouldn't be so bad if the track were bigger, but it's something like 13 laps/mile. I'd rather get on the treadmill, and I think if I go when it's not too busy I won't have to worry about the 30-minute time limit. Which should be fine for anything less than four miles, which most of my runs are. The longer stuff I'll still have to do outside.

Gaiters are god's gift to the cold climate denizen. Man, I love those things.
You know what else helps? Good ski gloves. They're ugly and bulky, but I used to go skiing at night, at that place in Bloomington, and even when it was 25 below and my breath was turning to chunks of ice on my eyelashes, my hands were perfectly toasty.
