Rent the Movie, Part II
I told Fly Girl I was getting out of work early on Wednesday. When I did leave at 7:45, I had a message from her on my voicemail telling me she had a surprise for me and that I should call her as soon as I got out of work. So I did, and she came on over. And she announced she was taking me to see Rent!
I've squealed every time I've seen mention of it, in previews or on tv or whatever. Wednesday night was opening night in the Twin Cities, so went and saw it at a blissfully uncrowded theater.
It was fantastic! I sniffled in a couple spots each time I saw the musical, but I cried through the whole second half of the movie (as did numerous other people in the theater). It was hard not to sing along. I think a fair number of people in the audience were teenage girl theater nerds who know every single word in the show.
And when you're one of those theater nerds, you have really high expectations for the movie adaptation of one of your favorite musicals. I thought the movie was very well done. AfterEllen loved it, too.
I have the soundtrack with the original cast, and it was trippy to hear all those exact same voices in the movie. (Out of seven main characters, only Joanne and Mimi were not in the original cast.) Hearing that so much of the original cast was returning was what got me excited about seeing the movie in the first place.
P.S. I did not moo at the screen.

I saw it on wed and loved it too. Unfortunately, I never saw it on stage. One of the friends I went with is a Rent freak. She was dissappointed with the movie. Am I the only one who find it funny that the television review focus is on Rosario Dawson, when the rest of the cast is original? I haven't once heard anyone say anything about Wilson or Jesse. My friend also hated the new Joanne. I was impressed with Rosario. She did well, but I wish I'd seen the original.
