No More Of That

Hanging out with work peeps outside of work seemed like a good idea at first, but I've decided that maybe it's not so much after all. I'd hang out with folks on an individual basis. Okay, I'd hang out with Sunshine Sinatra. And that might be about it.

It's not that I don't like them. It just feels like too much. I already spend 40 or more hours a week with these people. Actually, what really cements it for me is that we don't really have much to talk about but work. I'm not feeling much in the way of compatibility with anyone. On top of that, getting in on people's personal drama makes things a smidge more complex at work.

The compatibility thing made itself readily apparent at our Halloween party. My boss and one of the other engineers came, Sunshine Sinatra and some of my other fellow peons came, and it was just awkward and weird. It maybe didn't help that they all came pretty early before the party really got hopping.

I'm already mildly (and perhaps unnecessarily) ... not worried, exactly. But, well, I just think about how people like my boss are more the type of person I generally hang out with. But I have to be "down" with my co-workers. I got the feeling that if my boss and her friends had stayed long enough that she could have met my other friends who are all engineers that I used to work with, that they would have gotten along much better. But the work peeps weren't meshing. Not necessarily anybody's fault. Maybe it couldn't have been helped.

I don't know. It's weird. I was glad to have some built-in social activity for a while, but I'd rather go back to keeping things separate.

I figure, I see these folks nine hours a day already; why add to it?

Besides, I have rules about fishing off the company pier, which can be frustrating given the presence of Major Babes these days, but it's safer to avoid such things, lest the entire workplace dynamic go down the tubes following the inevitable breakup. Or so it seems to me.
