Potential Roommate Development

I got word from my roomie and also a phone call from a friend mentioning that said friend needs a roommate.

This could be cool. She's got a condo. It's near where I used to live (St. Louis Park, for the locals). I used to hang out with her quite a bit before I moved away, returned, and became a total hermit. I think we'd get along okay. She's got a boyfriend, so I suspect he visits a lot. Which is fine. I've only met him a couple times but he seems pretty cool and I don't think they're shmoopy annoying types.

Only hang up is she's got a cat. I think. Last time I checked, anyway. And while cats are certainly less intrusive than dogs, I'm allergic to them. And I don't really like them that much, but as long as the cat leaves me alone, it's okay. Except for that allergy thing.

Anyway, I'm gonna give her a call and see what's up. What the terms are. What the amenities are. What the cost is like. I might could deal with the cat. (I can't believe I'm saying this.)

If that doesn't work out, I've got several backup offers locally, both temporary ("you're welcome to my couch for up to a month") and longer-term. Not to mention I could just find a place like normal. Or move away all together. Or whatever the fuck. Who knows.

The roomie's girlfriend is back in town, so I have no idea when I'll see him next or find out about the person that came to look at his house yesterday (and thus whether I have until Aug 1 or Sep 1). He did mention mixing up a batch of sangria this weekend, since we've already plowed through the 2 gallons I made up last weekend, so maybe he'll be around.

Now playing: Mississippi by Train

UPDATE: Saw roomie this afternoon. The person that saw the house yesterday wants to take it and I gotta be out by August 28. I can work with a month and a half.

Talked to the friend who needs a roommate. Price is agreeable. If I want to have internet access, I gotta pay for it myself because she doesn't have a computer. Freak. Fine. Anyway. Habits seem to be mostly agreeable. Furniture quantities are agreeable. The cat thing I can work with.

Thing is, she's not sure if she even needs a roommate yet. Her boyfriend may or may not move in with her. They're still working through that conversation. I told her I'll keep looking for another place, I have until August 28, if I have any more questions or anything I'll let her know, and please give me a call when she and her boyfriend decide on how committed they are. (Okay, I didn't say that last part exactly like that.)

The search continues.

Hey - you loved my roommate's bitch cat from hell when you visited me in Boston.

I really do hope this works out babe. There's always a room for you in TX (and a kegerator). Of course, there's always a dog AND a cat at my place.

Hole up in an airport terminal like Tom Hanks?

Girl--when you have dander allergies, cats are nice and cute for all of three minutes and then you wake up the next morning with a splitting headache and blocked-up sinuses. Your life will be miserable.

...but then again, that's coming from a person who can't afford prescription allergy meds...or the Dr's visit required to get them, heh.

What Tiffany said is what I'm afraid of. But then Kimberley's got a good point.

I did spend a day/night in the airport in Auckland. That was kind of neat. For a day.

You'd be surprised what you put up with when forced to. New mobile no. I'll drunken dial you soon.

Maybe you could fashion an outfit for the cat from allergen-reducing fabric. Wrap it up in plastic wrap and just cut a little air hole and poo hole for it? Or just constantly spray it with allergen-reducing Febreze. Or maybe wear a particle mask.

Hmmm...yeah, my ideas aren't so great.

You could look into acupuncture. My roomate's brother got it for his cat allergy, then got two cats which supposedly caused him no further problems.

Bayou is allergic, and we have a kitty.

She doesn't touch her eyes or face after petting Cleo, and she washes her hands. If you move in with someone who has a cat, you'd have to be extra careful not to let the cat in your room.

But it IS doable. If you can tolerate the cat's personality, and manage to train yourself not to touch your eyes and stuff, I expect you can handle it.

Is the cat long haired or short? That makes a huge difference.

Is it a girl kitty? I was allergic to cats when I got my first one (who is a furball and a half). I had heard something about how female cats have less of whatever offensive hormone cats have that trigger allergies. If I can live with (now two!) kitties and not sneeze a hole in the wall, I imagine just about anybody could. :)

C-c-c-cat?! Girl, you already know what I'm going to say. Sneezing or not, it's still a cat.

man i'm having serious optical illusions. i keep thinking the comments are scrolling on the side. anyway, visiting someone with a cat is quite dif than moving in with one, especially if you have allergies. i have extremely bad cat allergies (antibiotic hospital bad) so i wouldn't consider it. if yours are just a little sneezing or w/e just think about it and get one hell of a good med.

Move in with me. My cat seems to fancy sitting on my roof and in my closet. You'll never know he's here, in fact if he keeps escaping out windows I'm guessing he won't be around much longer.

Kathy Howe said:

Oh. And as if I had to say it again...The Boy Toy will kick out his roommate if you want to live with him. He has a cable modem and hardly knows how to use it, and his only pets are a few casual pet peeves so you are probably all clear in the allergy department.
