Only Four More Weeks to Lose!
Back To School Challenge Brought To You By The Medical Weight Loss Pro-Teen Program
I just saw an ad for this on tv. I'm sure the Pro-Teen Plan is a positive thing for those who use it, but I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of sponsoring a back to school slimdown contest for kids.
On the one hand, there are kids who could benefit from learning about healthier eating and lifestyle choices. And it's well known that making a contest out of something is a good motivator. And Pro-Teen's website says things like "Want a better life?" and "Want self-confidence and better self-esteem?" so I would imagine/hope that there's a focus on overall wellness and not just getting skinnier.
But it also says "Want to be more accepted by the people at school?" Like the problem isn't about other kids being jerks, it's about you being too fat.

Well you know the thing is, too, there's at least some evidence that excessive dieting, particularly at an early age, causes you to be more prone to lose weight.
Making kids obsess over weight loss at an early age may just set 'em up for worse things to come.
They ought to be concentrating on health for these kids, not weight loss per se.
