Thing One and Thing Two
I was gonna weigh in on the whole Harvey Milk School issue, but my brain hurts thinking about it. Suffice it to say that I see the need for a safe haven for gay kids, but I'm not sure this is the way to go about it. See also: Natalie, David, Grey Bird, Michele, and Rossi.
And while we're talking about gay stuff, I like what Kevin Drum at CalPundit had to say about gay marriage. He's all sensible and reasonable and calm.

I haven't read everything about this gay high school thing - mostly just bloggers' reactions - but it seems to me it doesn't do a very good job of preparing kids for real life. Is that what high school is for? I don't know.
I'm straight and high school didn't prepare me for anything other than college drinking parties.
"Bring me a Frat Boy and a beer bong...and make it snappy!"
Yeah, halfway through my argument, I decided I was probably wrong. That's always fun.
I still can't decide. There are undeniably kids who suffer severely at the hands of their fellow students and it would certainly behoove them to be in a safer and more accepting environment.
On the other hand, it is a little bit escapist. And what to do about all the kids who are not confident and aware enough to self-identify at that age, or have issues with their parents, or just aren't out yet who are still having trouble in schools. And my other concern is that it's now a public school.
I feel like I've used that word behoove a lot lately.
I was gonna say something about how high school is not real life and all high school is about is getting into college, but that's totally not the case. It was for me, but it's not for everybody.
