I live at the intersection of two big roads. Big as in not exactly freeways because they have traffic lights but still 8-lane divided major traffic arteries. One bridges over the other at this intersection and as of this week they’re doing construction on that bridge. I knew that on the north-south road 2 lanes in either direction are blocked off (and not just with orange barrels, but with those concrete wall thingies), so after my errand-running yesterday I avoided it, only to find out the east-west road was just as bad. I’m so glad I don’t have to commute in this shit. As it is if I want to head in any direction but south I have to go at least a couple miles out of my way if I want to avoid the intersection altogether.
Cut to last night. I’m sitting in my room playing with my newly-acquired iCal, listening to iTunes, and keeping on eye on Conan. I stop the music and take the headphones off for a moment, and notice this slow, rhythmic pounding-of-metal sound. Like, the kind of sound you hear in movies when a really large scary futuristic robotic monster is coming to get you (because they’re never very nimble). I’ve heard the neighbor go in and out of his garage late at night and that’s a pretty horriffic noise, so I turn off all the lights and peek out the window. I can’t see any activity in the neighbor’s backyard or in my own. At this point I’m wondering if the wind is blowing in such a way that the pressure changes are causing a loose garage door or garbage bin or something to move around. I open the window to listen more closely, and the pounding sound immediately magnifies and I find it’s coming from the direction of the big intersection.
AHA! Mystery solved. It’s heavy construction equipment. However, it still sounds like a big scary monster and I’m totally gonna have to fall asleep with the headphones on if this keeps up.
