This year’s State of the Union Address would have been much more enjoyable if I had been drinking.
I hate how everybody claps after everything he says and folks start standing up. I hate the posturing by congress to sit on the aisle so they can get a 3-second photo op as he walks past.
What education reform was he talking about? Did I miss something?
Tax cuts = bullshit. If I had been in that chamber and had marshmallows to throw and a cowbell, I would have been all over that buuullllshit buuulllshit buuulllshit (Hey Shrub, does your wife know you’re fucking us?). A family of 4 making $40,000/yr will see their taxes go from ~$1100 to $45? Nuh uh.
Energy plan is garbage. Of course it’s “good for the environment, and the economy.” Although, I gotta admit, I’m ambivalent on the drilling for oil wherever it is up north issue.
$1.2 billion in research funding for hydrogen-powered vehicles. He couldn’t even say hydrogen. Refer back to “good for the environment, and good for the economy” requirement. Hydrogen cars (in some form) exist already. And hydrogen is nice, but hybrid electric is much more realistic and much more quickly attainable.
Other general complaints: The gratuitous use of religious anything (“We will help the homeless, the fatherless, the addicted, one heart, one soul, one conscience at a time,” especially those that have to “walk through a prison gate to see their mother or father.”) And do “faith-based” groups not have enough influence already? Now we want to give them government funding? He says end “partial birth abortion” but he really just means abortion. And he sure didn’t define “human cloning” when he said he wanted to ban it, too.
And yes, let’s give all sorts of aid to Iraq while we bomb the hell out of them like we do in other countries. Lets give all sorts of money and drugs and aid to AIDS victims in Africa when we’re sitting at home telling our kids to abstain and use the damn rhythm method. And hey, let’s keep other countries from threatening us and having weapons of mass destruction by threatening them with our weapons of mass distruction. But then agin, “Hitlerism, militarism, and communism were all defeated by the might of the United States of America.”
I swear Edward Kennedy was asleep.
I cannot imagine a speech like this coming from France. “The full force and might of France!”
I was underwhelmed by WA Governor Gary Locke’s response on behalf of the Democrats. But three cheers for the Asian guy! The overall theme of “to be strong abroad, we must be strong at home” I agree with. I like how he threw in digs on affirmative action in higher education and pandering to special interest groups.
I might go do a shot anyway. Because I can can can!
