Today’s thing I learned: More about the European Union

I already had the sense that it’s more of an economic union than a political or social one. The idea of “competences,” which delineate the responsibilities of the union vs the member states, makes this much clearer. The union has exclusive competence over basically all fiscal and monetary policy (and common fisheries!). Everything else is up to the member states to varying degrees, unless the union steps in with a unified approach.
