Dot Com or Dot Net?

I want to buy my own name as a domain name. It’s partly so I can build a personal site, but mostly because I want an email address that I have better control over than the one from my parents’ ISP that I’ve been using for professional purposes.

I can’t decide between .com and .net. I’ll probably register both, but which one to actually use? I’m perched comfortably on the fence. Right when I start to think I’ve settled on one, the other starts looking real good.

UPDATE: Some cocksnuggle (I have my suspicions) skewed the results, but I went back and fixed it (I think that’s close). The poll remains open, but I hereby declare .com the winner.

I went with .net because .com connotes “commercial”, which I really didn’t want to be associated with on my personal site. Just me, though. I guess most people “.com” stands for “computers” or something. *shrug*

I was sort of thinking the same about the “commercial” aspect of it, but .com is, like, the standard. The default. The norm. There was no “dot net bubble.”

    But .net is… variety. I don’t know.

why not .info like me? I mean it’s about you right? so people going there are getting info on ya…

I think you should go with .com. Sure it was originally meant for commercial businesses, but it’s the extension everyone associates with the web and you might lose mail if your address is .net.

I went with .com for myself. My logic basically was that people by default will type a .com when they’re typing in your URL. And it’s so freakin’ hard to get a .com now that I’d snag it if it’s still available.

.com, hands down. When in life is the ORIGINAL not the best? And this way, new people you meet with think you’ve had it since Q2 ’97.

President Bush? Darren from “Bewitched”? Pistons uniform colors? The Temptations?

Yeah, you got a good point there.

I thought Bush killed all the gay people? Oh well…

  • http://www.swirlspice.com Erica

And then somebody had to go and ruin it by clicking a bajillion times. Shithead.

That was Reagan. And that was an asinine and intentionally inflammatory comment. Not that I’d expect anything intelligent or rational out of you, Jamille. Fuck off.

I’m now very fond of .net, but that’s because the stupid Scottsdale Ranch Animal Hospital stole the URL I originally wanted!

Good call. People more easily remember/recognize dotcom anyway.

Hmph. I say you should go for “.us”. Because it’s probably $2 cheaper :-).
