I’m supposed to be working on my resume, but I went ahead and finished my taxes first. They are filed and out of the way. Last year it took less than the 10-16 days they tell you it’ll take for the direct deposit to go through. Hopefully the same will be true this year. I ended up sticking with TurboTax since I found out the software for Tax Act is PC only.
You’re supposed to be able to get a 50% discount on your TurboTax fees if you have any kind of account with Fidelity, but I clicked everywhere they told me to click and I couldn’t get the discount to apply. So between the federal and state filing fees and the bank processing fee, a $52 chunk is coming out of my refund. But it’s a good size refund so I’m not too upset about it.
I’m hoping the moving expenses I deducted don’t arouse suspicion. I only had a receipt for the U-Haul I used to move here. I just guesstimated on the gas and made sure to put in an odd number. I’m thinking it won’t actually make any difference in my refund if I end up having to change that. My income was so low that I don’t actually owe any federal tax, so the amount of the deduction shouldn’t have any impact. I got a Minnesota Working Family Credit, which is the state’s version of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit which I also received. If I hadn’t paid any student loan interest I could have filed the 1040EZ.
This shit is so much easier when you don’t make any money. Still, I think I’d rather make the sacrifice and have a more complex tax return.
