This has not been the best start to a week. So, I was working nights last week and my sleep schedule was all jacked up. I think I made it worse by staying up all day Friday (Fly Girl and the outlet mall beckoned), so I was exhausted by Friday afternoon. Got in bed at 4pm and didn’t budge until 11:00. So I missed out on Girls’ Night at KathyHowe’s and I missed out on the 612 party, both of which I very much wanted to attend. I then spent the rest of the weekend either sleeping or dozing on the couch.
This jacked up sleep schedule resulted in my being wide awake at 4:30 Monday morning. After laying in bed for an hour, I decided to go for a morning run. As I’m returning from a very pleasant 5 miles, I see a tow truck in the parking lot of the hardware store across the street. The lot where I had left my car. You see where this is going.
Hardware store bastards towed my car. I’d gotten a note from them once last winter when my car impeded the plowing of their lot. Fine. But this is a totally random weekend. There’s plenty of parking over there. I wasn’t preventing any of their customers from parking. There weren’t more non-customer parkers than usual, so it’s not like the situation was getting out of control or anything. I mean, yeah, they’ve got the sign up that says that their lot is for their customers only and you’ll be towed if you’re not a customer of theirs. But come on!
So I took a shower, got dressed for work, and caught a cab over to the ghetto of Northeast Minneapolis where the tow lot is. The fee was $280, cash only. Their ATM would only give me $200. So now I’m $80 short, have no way to get to a bank, and I still don’t have my car.
Before I continue with the story, let me interject with another. I just switched from Sprint to Verizon (I have four bars in my apartment!), and let’s just say that the transition wasn’t the smoothest. The process of porting my number over, which should have taken about 10 minutes, was going on 18 hours at that point.
So I called Fly Girl. I felt bad, because I knew she worked late, I knew I’d be waking her up, and even worse, I knew she wouldn’t recognize my number since the old one hadn’t ported over yet and thus she wouldn’t pick up the phone. So I called a few times, then left a voicemail, then called a few more. She finally picked up and was annoyed as hell. But she graciously came and bailed my ass out anyway.
So I rolled into work late, crabby, and indignant, when I had been looking forward to getting there early and calmly.
Yet another kick in the pants: I took my iBook in to the Apple Store on Saturday on account of the dark, empty screen. Both the video out and the backlight are gone kaput. Dave at the Genius Bar said it was very strange for both the video and the backlight to go out at the same time. Then he informs me that the damn thing was one week out of warranty. *argh* But he said they could squeeze it in under warranty anyway. *whew* Which is fantastic. But I’m without home computer for a week and you know how that makes me twitch. I just need this guy to hang on for a couple more months. Then I’m designating my extra December paycheck to the purchase of a new MacBook.
To top it all off I think I’m getting sick. I’m not sick yet, but I’m on the verge. A general malaise. I never get sick. I took some Zicam and have been chugging the water. I had thought that I was just dehydrated and not really sick, but I’m so full of water I’m about to float away, so that’s not it.
On a positive note, I was so wiped I went to bed at 9:30 last night, woke right up at 5:30 this morning, and ended up going for another morning run. Two days in a row! Four, actually, if you count the weekend. Feels good to a) be fully rested when I get up, b) get going in the a.m., and c) have that all out of the way for the day.
