Kevin of Wizbang has opened nominations for the 2003 Blog Awards.
*sigh*
The word for today is job: J-O-B ambivalent. If all the same big dogs win, then the awards suck. If some non-political people win, then it’s kind of cool. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy reading a few of the big dogs. But damn, they are everywhere. And it’s entirely possible for someone to be an enjoyable read without being controversial and opinionated.
As if there’s not enough focus on punditry just looking at the nominations for Best Overall and Best New and Best Group, there are Best Liberal and Best Conservative categories. Bias much? What about best place blogging? Or best journaling? Or best geek/technical blog? Or best event/travel blogging? Why is the Media category by media bloggers and not about media? Even Best Humor Blog is half-full of political humorists. Just because everyone in the circle-jerk finds daily life and personal anecdotes boring doesn’t mean other people do.
I’d especially like to see some completely personal (i.e., not at all political) sites win. Like I see Buzz and Joelle are nominated in the Best New Blog (est. 2003) category. (Hypothetically, I could be a smidge bitter because I’m ineligible for that category.)
The nominees in the top few Ecosystem categories seem awfully redundant. Is this gonna be a consolation prize for people who didn’t win in another category (same goes for Best Female Authored)? I think it’ll be nifty down in the dregs, though. Which is why I nominated myself here. Hey, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, eh? Worth a shot. I will follow the legislative process and make nominations and vote where I see fit and my make my voice heard! *shakes fist at sky*
This is not to knock Kevin, who has put a great deal of work into this, I’m sure. He’s merely providing the forum, it’s up to us to populate the ballots. And, like I said, not to knock the popular bloggers just because they’re popular, or not my cup of tea. Spread the love around is all I’m sayin’. Pick me! Love me!
I feel like Glenn. And I’m waiting for him to nominate himself.
UPDATE #1: I figured Lauren would not think highly of the awards and especially the Female Authored category. I specifically nominated her for that category not because she’s “pretty good… for a chick” but because she regularly addresses feminism and related topics and because I wanted to get the name of a really good non-A-lister out there.
UPDATE #2: Buzz weighs in.
