The Twenty Dollar Yard Line

I love how they use computers to put the first down line on the football field for those of us watching games on tv (here’s an explanation of how they do that). Very helpful. And certainly better than when Fox was doing that thing where they light up the hockey puck.

I’m watching the Michigan-Minnesota football game on ESPN and now they’re using this technology for advertising. In this case, they keep flashing the new more colorful and secure $20 bills. First, you can hardly tell what it actually looks like by projecting it on astroturf. I’ve checked this on two different tvs. Second, must we inject advertising everywhere? Are there not already enough advertising opportunities in the broadcast? I’m annoyed.

And WHY, exactly, are we advertising money anyway? Like, “Oh, no thanks – I don’t need any twenties. If I can’t get my cash in fifties and tens I’m not interested. What do you mean, there’s a new twenty? That’s it, I’m buying fifty of ‘em!”

I mean, it’s good that people know what they look like (probably to stop those idiots that cashed the, what was it, a $200 bill with GWB on it or something?) but honestly. It’s a bit much, really.

I remember seeing something about how on New Year’s, a lot of the billboards we saw on TV as being in Time Square weren’t really there. they can put stuff anywhere – creepy.
